Partnership with the STEM Translational Communication Center (STCC) at the University of Florida

Expanding Horizons in Health Communication: An Asian Perspective is the result of partnership between the STEM Translational Communication Center (STCC) at the University of Florida and the International Research Centre for the Advancement of Health Communication (IRCAHC) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

This book focuses exclusively on health communication research and clinical practice in Asia. The chapters also seek to be inclusive of different philosophies for maintaining well-being with research coming from fields of both Chinese Traditional Medicine and Western Medicine. In addition, The chapters investigated the challenges around disseminating public health information so that comprehensible messages are sent to the public to enable them to make informed health decisions.

The book was divided into three parts. The first part focuses on mental health and these chapters explore very different contexts in this domain.

The second part investigated more traditional areas of health communication. This is the largest part of the book and includes a range of different research studies focusing on health provider and patient communication. Many of the chapters in this part position communication from an Eastern perspective while some compare Western Medicine (WM) and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

The final part examines other important, but distinct, areas of health and communication and is a celebration of the range of topics the edited book embraces. Topics include the role of teamwork in residential aged care and how safety can sometimes be compromised. Health policy and information dissemination is tackled by examining a diverse set of countries and finally a software analytical tool is used to interpret Cantonese data.
